The health benefits of sunshine

May 2nd, 2010 Posted in feel good factor Tags:

I so agree with this blog post, must have more of it!  Just a few minutes out in the sunshine a day has so many health benefits, and don’t we all just know how everyone we meet seems happier when the sun is shining! Seems it has many benefits for our health, including increasing our levels of dopamine, one of the feel good hormones.

Another idea is to bring the colours of sunshine in to our homes. The colours yellow and orange are bright and cheerful. Personally I love to have a vase of yellow daffodils in my home in the early springtime, when ever I look at them it brings a smile to my face.  Use the colours of nature. Green  reminds us of plants and trees. Surround yourself with reminders of sunshine and nature.  Bring them in to your home.  Brightly coloured flowers, green plants, brightly coloured pictures, that remind us of trees, nature and sunshine, all have a positive effect and trigger our endorphins.

Whenever you can, walk in nature. It is Spring here in the UK and the blossom trees are amazing!  We are blessed with having beautiful bluebell woods near to where we live.  Seeing the variations in the colours from sky blue to indigo, creating  a carpet as far as the eye can see, contrasting against the lush green of the beech trees, does wonders for the  soul. Get out there and enjoy it!

Thoughts for the day

Thoughts for the day.. thankyou to Buddha

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it”.

“To keep the body in good health is a duty…otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him”.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment”.

“The tongue like a sharp knife… kills without drawing blood.”

“He is able who thinks he is able”

“Have compassion for all beings, rich and poor alike; each has their suffering. Some suffer too much, others too little.”

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

“Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it.”

Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”

Are we in danger of turning sadness in to a sickness…?

February 10th, 2010 Posted in feel good factor, mental health Tags:

Just been watching interesting programme on BBC 4.( It’s only a theory)

The theory put forward is that rather than feel sad, lots of us take medication…..  because we have the  expectation that we should be happy all the time. Some of this stems from the media. We are in danger of living our lives like a fairy tale, always wanting the happy ending, the perfect job, the knight in shining armour, our own Mr Darcy .

This is not to undermine true clinical depression, a truly horrible illness, which can feel like a chasm of darkness to the sufferer and needs expert treatment, and deserves our sympathy.

So many of us say  we are depressed, when we mean we are sad, or disappointed, or bored…..

The tendency can be to try and suppress these emotions with alternatives to drugs… food, alcohol, work, exercise,  … all of which can turn in to addictions..

In fact, sadness is a normal emotion, always remember,  it will pass…

Try smiling,…. just by changing your facial expression  you will be amazed how much your mood can change..  :)
